Gaudi and the 4 Cats

Barcelona has its own unique character, predominantly due to Gaudi and his architecture.  It is an intriguing bustling city, where you feel like your sometimes on a 1960s film set.  It is also a great city to base yourself to visit other cities.  We both had wanted to visit Barcelona after falling in love with the film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

I would definitely recommend this film to watch before you go.

After photographing some of the famous sights

we wanted to track down Els Quatre Gats (the 4 Cats Restaurant) as used in the film where Vicky and Cristina are first approached by "the painter".

Els Quatre Gats  is situate in Barcerlona's atmospheric Gothic Quarter off Avinguda del Portal de l'Angel at Carrer de Montsio 3.    This place is a lot bigger than we thought and sadly targeted by the Cruise Ships.

The 4 Cats does not actually mean four cats but is the name given in Catalan slang for "just a few people" as when the owner said he would stay open 24 hours a day his friends said "no-one will come, it will just be you and four cats".  Artists used to meet here, one of course being Picasso in his youth.

I ordered the house special of noodles in black squid ink.

Unfortunatly there was no sign of Vicky or Cristina, but instead a very large table of Japanese tourists.  Interestingly enough, they all left their wine on the table, which is very palatable.  Strange how different cultures work.  Obviously you don't drink wine with your food in Japan !
