Cafe Belmonte and Murcia

One of my favourite treats is drinking the strong Spanish coffee that the local bars sell in mainland Spain.

I go as far as only booking room only when travelling.  No breakfast.  As although hotels normally offer a breakfast or a buffet I prefer to find a local cafe and enjoy their coffee cortado and some toast.

Normally around 10ish we indulge in a second breakfast and I have been known to order a brandy to compliment the coffee.  This I have discovered not to be such a good idea as the free pouring method of spirits can end with far too big a measure for this time of the day.

When last returning to Murcia having booked a table for lunch at the Taberna Tipica la Pequena (which is one of my favourite restaurants in Spain, as they specialise in roast shoulder of kid i.e. goat)  we stopped in the square for coffees.  I asked for a brandy to share with our guests and was told instead to order a Belmonte!

When these came they arrived in three colours, white at the bottom !  then black, then brown on the top.  It is in fact thick condensed milk in the bottom (thats why it sinks) then coffee and then a little brandy on top.  We became converted on the spot.

This particular bar went one stage further, and left a bottle of brandy on our table for us to top up if we wanted.

How decadent and wonderful is that.  This made a true coffee drinking experience go from good to sensational.
