Cabin Allowance / Hand luggage only !

If I could only give you one tip and never speak no more, it would be to "travel with hand luggage only".  We have all heard the expression "travel light see more" but its not just that, its also so much easier !

No queuing to check in cases, no waiting for luggage on carousels, no lost cases and damaged cases and broken wheels, no taking back home a case full of clothes unworn and finally cheaper flight costs.

Yes, I agree this takes a lot of planning and takes you out of your comfort zone.  But once you have done it, I guarantee you will be converted.

So take note now because this is how it is done....

Firstly sit your partner down and explain this can be done ! Explain that all hotels now have hairdryers and ironing boards.  Hotels offer towels for the beach (if your on the coast) and often complimentary sun umbrellas and often free soap and shampoos.   Sadly in Spain, they rarely offer a kettle in the room for coffee.  You need to explain that there is no need for high heels as often cobbled streets and high heels dont work.  Also hotels offer a laundry service for guests.

Start by checking the weather first, in advance and pack accordingly.  Then check with your airline for the measurement and weight allowance, as all airlines are different.  Being as hand luggage is free they are not going to make it easy for you.  i.e. check if the measurements include the wheels and handles etc.  Toiletries are packed in no more than 100 ml containers and put in a plastic see through bag for customer search to view if necessary.  100 ml of anything will usually last you, and you can buy more out there if you need.

Shoes make or break this deal !  If you want a different pair of shoes per outfit DONT GO !  Choose one pair of sturdy walking shoes and fly in the these, and pack one pair of worn in sandals, that's it.  Plan and lay out your clothes on the bed, choosing what clothes you need for each day and then put one outfit back, as oppose to taking a spare.  (Rather than take a heavy sweater just in case, I have been known to wear two shirts to keep warm).  Then learn to roll your clothes instead of fold.  They crease less and this works.

Ladies need to consider light weight clothes, gentlemen need to pack long sleeved shirts and long linen trousers, some places you will just not be accepted in shorts.

Finally always make sure your sandals are worn in, cut feet on day one is never good.  But take plasters anyway.  In case of a delay sacrifice your heavy book, which you will never finish and replace with a newspaper that includes a good crossword and take a pack of cards.

Ladies should consider getting a lightweight handbag for travelling, stripped of all unnecessary items.  Then check your airline website to see if you can take a handbag (or manbag for gentlemen) as an extra,  or does it need to be put inside your hand luggage, as all airlines are different.

Then do a full practice pack.  A lot of work I know.  But it can be done !
